Baptism is a big and important step in your life - something that Jesus took
very seriously.
He never taught that baptism saves from sin, but that it is
an important step of obedience in your spiritual journey toward
knowing God. (Matthew 28:19-20).
It illustrates your new life as a Christian.
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death
in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the
glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Romans 6:4)
Baptism doesn’t make you a believer - it shows
that you already believe.
It is the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this
not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that
no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8,9)
Baptism celebrates our receiving Christ by saying “yes” to Him!
In baptism, we’re immersed in water - buried - to show the death of an old life where “self” is king. Then we’re lifted out of the water - resurrected - to show the birth of new life where Christ is Lord. (1 Corinthians 12:13)
How we baptize…
Friendship follows the biblical practice of immersing believers totally under water to symbolize that in baptism we join with Christ, identifying with his death and resurrection.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water... (Matt 3:16)
And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. (Acts 8:38)
For what I received I passed on to you as of first
importance, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according
to the Scriptures.
(1 Cor 15:3-4)
Who we baptize…
The Bible indicates that baptism is connected with saying “yes” to Christ. Friendship baptizes people who are mature enough to understand that they, as an individual, have made the choice to receive God’s offer of salvation through Christ.
