Child Dedication

When we choose to have our child dedicated, it gives parents, as well as extended family, friends and the church an opportunity to thank God for the birth of the child. A child dedication is a three-fold covenant, Parent to God, Parent, family and friends to Child, and the Church to Parents.

  • Parents promise to teach their child about the love of God, the salvation gift through Jesus Christ, and the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
  • Parents, family, and friends promise to love the child unconditionally and nurture.
  • The church promises to support the parents in the task of raising child in the faith.

The dedication of children was taught and practiced in the Bible. Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to the Lord at the temple in Jerusalem. During his ministry, Jesus welcomed children to come to him, took them in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them. Children are a gift from God. Like everything good in life, they come from God and they belong to Him.

In modern-day child dedications, parents dedicate their children back to God, asking for His blessing. They promise to nurture their children in a Christian home and environment, and are challenged to guide and teach their children in spiritual development. There is no water involved, and the child is not automatically saved, or in the faith, because of the ceremony. Faith is passed on to our children by helping them develop their own personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
