What Is Semp?
This may be your first experience with SEMP or you may be an old pro! Wherever you are in the standings, it is important to understand the SEMP event and its impact on your students.
SEMP began in the mid 1980's in Chicago, Illinois. It was originally called Summer Evangelism Missions Project but later adopted the name Students Equipped to Minister to Peers to better emphasize our passion to help students reach students. Over 50,000 students and leaders have attended SEMP through the years in different parts of the country. The goal of SEMP remains the same - equip students to share their faith with their peers and provide them and their youth leaders with a model of how to do so.
SEMP gives your ministry-minded students skills and motivation to share their faith and encourages them to go home and influence their youth group and church to do likewise. SEMP is not for your entire youth group. Most students are not yet at the spiritual level of wanting to minister to others. That is why it is so important that the youth pastor is careful to screen the students that are coming to SEMP in order to provide the best experience for all. SEMP also provides a unique opportunity for the youth leader to get away with their ministry level students, spending extended time with them, much like Jesus did with his maturing disciples.
SEMP is especially important for this generation of students. Statistically most people who trust Christ do so before the age of 18 or later after having been influenced for Christ by the age of 18. Students have closer contact and spend more time with their peers than virtually any adult will, so it makes sense that if a student is going to be reached for Christ then a well-trained, spiritually minded student will have the best opportunity. We believe that if a student learns to reach people of his or her own age, then that desire will stay with them as they age and mature.

Preparation Before the Trip
What type of students should come to SEMP?
SEMP is not for all students. Youth leaders should be discerning when it comes to promotion of SEMP. This event is designed specifically for students who cry out for a deeper relationship with God and are serious about sharing their faith with their friends. This event will be a holistic equipping experience that will stretch, challenge and prepare them for peer ministry.
What type of chaperones/leaders should come to SEMP?
Leaders should understand that they will be sharing their faith and attending the training just like the students. Leaders will be in charge of their group of students at all times.
What should NOT be brought to SEMP?
The following items are prohibited by students attending SEMP: cell phones, ipods, portable music players, laptops, video games, or any other sort of electronic wonder of the day for students.
What is the dress code for SEMP?
Modest clothing is to be worn at all times. Each day you will be out street witnessing, remember that we are ambassadors for Christ. Leaders will ask you to change if you are wearing inappropriate clothing.
Girls: Modest slacks or jeans. Shorts/skirts not more than 4 inches about the knee. No low cut or midriff baring tops.
